Festival of Lights
Diwali, or Deepavali, is the Hindu festival of lights. One of the most celebrated Hindu festivals of all, Hindus really let it all hang out on this day. The festival symbolizes the victory of 'light over darkness', and 'good over evil'. During the celebration, temples, shrines, and building of all types hang large lines of small, bright and colorful lights. There is general feasting, and the poor are given free food, with old, used or cheap clothes given to old, helpless women.A popular one (translated) is:

When is Diwali?
The festival is generally celebrated in autumn (which translates to spring in the southern hemisphere), and preparation for it goes on for a continued 5 to 6 days. The festival itself lasts for about 2 days, during both of which the Hindus celebrate hard. It is generally held sometime during the months of November or October.Inspirational Status DP
How is Diwali celebrated?
Diwali has celebrated a thousand ways, and it is impossible to list them all. But namely, huge statues of the Hindu Goddess, Kali, are built for the occasion and displayed in specially built, large structures called Pandals. The statues are decorated with the symbols of death (the domain of Kali), and Kali herself is decorated with weapons and worshipped for 2 continued days. It is fed with cooked food, and at the end of the festival, is unloaded ceremoniously in the Ganges river.Hindus, and many others, light fireworks for this occasion. There are some staples of the fireworks industry like Spinning Wheels and Color Flares, but they are largely very different and varied. Almost all of them employ the use of colored fire, which makes for two of the most colorful days of the whole year.
